Washington, DC Area Performances the Week of December 6-12th

Shakespeare's classic story of star-crossed lovers is one of Synetic's landmark productions. And just in time for the holidays, the company will revisit its passionate and lyrical production of Romeo and Juliet. Love, passion and timelessness are all made stunningly physical in this rendition of Shakespeare's great romantic tragedy. Set within the gears of a giant clock, Synetic's adaptation explores the untimely nature of one of literature's greatest love stories. The gears of the clock become the world – the church, the balcony and the mausoleum all transform before the eyes. Using shadows, props, mime, dance, sinuous combat, and, most of all, passionate acting, Romeo and Juliet is a heart-stopping thrill to experience.

In the cramped kitchen of The Golden Dragon, a pan-Asian restaurant, a young Chinese cook--the new one, the one who's looking for his sister--has a toothache. The orders keep flying as he screams in the kitchen, knitting the customers' lives together in a mix of fried rice noodles, steamed dumplings, and pineapple-peach chicken. The other four cooks pull their coworker's tooth using some vodka and a spare wrench. His tooth ends up in the Thai soup of an exhausted flight attendant. In the apartment building above her, a young couple fight and eat takeout, while another man escapes from his apartment to the restaurant below to avoid watching his wife move out. The same man ends up drinking with the shopkeeper of the dry goods store next door to the restaurant, who is more connected to the young Chinese man than anyone suspects. Dark, funny, and startling, Schimmelpfennig's play traces the isolation and unexpected connections of a globalized world.

Lauren Weedman is an actor, trying to live the life in LA. She volunteers with Beyond Bars, an advocacy group that works in a women's jail, hoping that her work will take her out of her increasingly self-absorbed LA-life. She means well, but things keep happening. Like trying to find her orientation for Beyond Bars, while chatting on her cell phone about her recent evening with "really, just the tiniest bit of cocaine." And then finding out that her orientation group has overheard everything she's said. But her saving grace is her honesty and disarming humor--she eventually tells her orientation group she signed up "because a women's jail is the only place in LA where I have a shot at being the prettiest girl in the room." Ultimately, Weedman comes to embody women from across the economic and incarceration divides as she comes to understand these women--and herself--on new terms.

Adventure Theatre will hold a slightly adjusted Autism/Sensory Friendly performance for those families with children who are diagnosed with Autism, Asperger's syndrome and other conditions related to sensory awareness on 12/31. An ASL interpreted performance will be held on 12/3. Both performances are open to the public.
