A Multimedia Resource for Inclusive Community Service
Supporting efforts by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) to increase the participation of people with disabilities in national service programs, 2000-2001 CNCS Fellow Emily E. Miller documented the exchange of talents and opportunities between national service programs and individuals with disabilities. It is a multimedia resource, part documentary and part training tool, featuring voices, images, and ideas meant to bolster the inclusion of people with disabilities and the communities in which they serve. This section offers concrete examples of the contributions and gains of people with disabilities in service programs in their own words.
What you will find here:
- Field Essay: An overview and summary of Emily Miller's qualitative interviews with 32 service participants who have disabilities written to provide service program staff with strategies for negotiating the challenges and reaping the benefits of inclusion. This essay provides a philosophical and practical approach to inclusion grounded by the experiences of participants in national service.
- Participants: Audio and text excerpts from interviews with the participants in national service programs who served as consultants. Hear and read about what they have contributed and gained from national service, and their advice to programs to successfully include people with disabilities.

©The National Service Inclusion Project (NSIP) is a training and technical assistance provider on disability inclusion, under a cooperative agreement (#08TAHMA001) from Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). NSIP partners with the Association on University Centers on Disability, National Council on Independent Living, Association on Higher Education and Disability and National Down Syndrome Congress to build connections between disability organizations and all CNCS grantees, including national directs, to increase the participation of people with disabilities in national service.
